“What I find the most beautiful about my work? The combination of technical skills and leadership. I still work with my hands, but I am also involved in solving problems, thinking about improvements, and guiding colleagues. No day is the same, and that keeps it challenging.”
Monique started her career in the graphic sector, but wanted to work more with her hands. When a friend pointed out a position at VDL ETG Almelo, she applied. After a tour, she was immediately enthusiastic. She has now been working at VDL ETG for nearly nine years and has progressed to a team leader in the gluing department. Thanks to her extensive experience within the organisation, she is an important link in the team and contributes ideas on technical and process improvements.
Varied – Solution-oriented – People-focused
As a team leader, I ensure that the work process runs smoothly and that colleagues receive the right support. I consider improvements, solve problems, and make sure we can work as efficiently as possible. Additionally, the human aspect is very important. Colleagues sometimes come to me with private matters, and that trust must be built. It's not just about the work but also about creating a pleasant and safe working environment.
The variation. Not a single day goes as planned, which keeps it challenging. I work on the shop floor, but I am also involved in process improvements and management. That combination of practice and strategy makes the work interesting. Moreover, high-tech manufacturing is incredibly educational. You see how complex products are made, and if you're curious, you can learn an enormous amount here.
The growth I have experienced. When I started at VDL ETG, I mainly thought: we'll see where it takes me. But by seizing opportunities and remaining open to development, I have progressed. I have learned to understand various departments and processes, and now I look at things very differently. The role of team leader has changed me not only professionally but also as a person.
Be curious and take the initiative yourself. Here you will get the chance to learn a lot and grow, but you have to seize it yourself. If you wait and see, nothing will happen. Additionally, it is important to be flexible. In high-tech production, not everything always goes according to plan, and you need to be able to switch quickly. But if you enjoy variety and challenges, VDL ETG is a fantastic place to work.
